News from CEO David Baumgarten

My news this month must be the birth of my first grandchild. My daughter Vanessa presented my wife Karen and I with grandson Cooper Benjamin Brown. Watch out for the brag book. (And you think I am joking!)

The other good news is that we are in the process of implementing our strategies to deliver the Federal Government's 'One Stop Shop' for small business. July was a month to catch our breath; now, with Business September around the corner it is all systems go.

In this newsletter you will read how we've expanded our services into Canterbury Bankstown, and in the next few months we will be increasing our activities in the eastern suburbs, city and inner west.

We'll be launching a new look website in October to complement these changes to the BEC.

We are also entering awards season, and in this newsletter you can read about three separate business awards initiatives that you can enter.

Hope you have a great August,

David Baumgarten
CEO

Business September 2008

Each year in September the NSW Department of State and Regional Development put on Business September.

Our three business enterprise centres - Sydney Clearly Business, Eastern Suburbs, and Bankstown - will be holding events as part of Business September (watch our calendars).

This event is the state's most comprehensive small business program. It helps business operators deliver results for their enterprises by connecting with clients and other business operators. It encourages innovation, and creates new possibilities and new opportunities.

More than 300 events including seminars, workshops, expos and award ceremonies will be held for small business operators across New South Wales during September.

So brace yourself, clear your schedule and look for events that will assist your business to grow.

The Many Parts of You

Business Wednesday, Bondi

Are you satisfied with your performance? Is your business suffering because of your performance?

Part of you knows exactly what to do and how to do it to achieve success. But there are other parts of you that sometimes 'get in the way'.

In this Business Wednesday we will help you identify the parts of you that help, and the parts that hinder.

New Federal Funding for the BEC

The BEC is proud to announce that we have been awarded Federal Government funding as part of the government's budget pledge to spend $42 million over four years on one-stop small business advisory centres across Australia.

The funding will support 36 business enterprise centres in suburban, rural and regional Australia.

Small Business Minister Craig Emerson said the funding will strengthen business enterprise centres and help them expand their capacity to help small business debutantes and those already in operation.

"This new $42 million small business program is part of the Government's overall small business strategy that includes cutting red tape in 27 areas of business regulation, amending the law to prevent powerful businesses from misusing their market power against small businesses, tax relief for small business owners, easing skill shortages and a national high-speed broadband network."

This funding means we will be able to expand the depth and range of our programs, and bring you even more of the quality services that you have come to expect from your BEC. In Bankstown, we will be conducting Business Wednesdays, networking events and business facilitation services. We will also be increasing our presence in Canterbury, the inner west and the eastern suburbs.
