News from CEO David Baumgarten

Firstly, I would like to apologise to you if you received duplicate emails during May. It seems our emails were banked up out in cyberspace. I was conscious that we had a number of events that you may have wanted to attend, and not knowing if you'd received our e-invites, I resent them. We have now taken steps to ensure that this does not happen again.

This month, I am facing new challenges in staff changes. Every small business goes through this and I am no different. From past experience it can be a good test of your systems and procedures.

My right hand lady Nichole Richardson is leaving the organisation after 17 years with the BEC Network (14 years with Botany BEC and 3 years with us). Nichole has been actively involved in the SES in a volunteer capacity. She has now secured a full-time position with the NSW State Emergency Service as the Deputy Region Controller, Lachlan Region (located in Parkes). This role primarily focuses on emergency operations management and planning.

I am indebted to Nichole for her commitment to the BEC Network and assisting me to expand our organisation. Nichole, we will all miss you (especially me). Thank you.

June was a quiet month for us (I managed to have a holiday), however July is proving to be a busy one. We have an array of events that offers something for everyone.

This month we have the Eastern Suburbs Business Breakfast series on 10 July. Our speaker is Rob Hartnett, who wrote the best seller Small Business, Big Opportunity!

I would also like to thank the Courier Newspaper group for providing sponsorship in 2007/2008 of our Randwick and Eastern Suburbs Business Breakfast series.

This month we have the Burwood Business Breakfast on 18 July. Our speaker is Michael Burdette, who wrote the just released book Your Business Navel - Build a Healthier Business and Edge Out the Competition!

I would like to thank the Courier for providing sponsorship in 2007/2008 of our Burwood Business Breakfast series.

Just a reminder of the Virgin Blue National Small Business Summit on 3 July; the City of Randwick Bi-Annual Business Awards Program; and Anthill's Cool Company Awards. More details in this newsletter. Also don't forget to check our community noticeboard - among coming events is an eBay workshop in Canada Bay.

Have a really good month.

Cheers

David Baumgarten
CEO

Get your business into our new sample bags

With all the events and workshops we are offering, we have decided to introduce a bag that will contain business information relevant to the event. We will also be using the bags to hold handouts for client visits to either of our offices.

An opportunity now exists for our members and sponsors to supply brochures or other material for these bags. Where an event is sponsored we will ensure there are no conflicting brochures.

For more information on this initiative please contact leona@easternsuburbsbec.com.au.

Burwood Business Breakfast Series - 18 July

Sales, sales, sales… in today's cut-throat global market, business operators know that increased sales are essential to fuel company growth and boost the bottom line.

Is VoIP the right choice for your business?

Small business operators struggling to understand how internet telephony can help their business have been given some assistance.

The Guide to VoIP for Small Businesses, released by SETEL (Small Enterprise Telecommunications Centre Ltd), looks at what Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) offers to the small business.

Small business situations that will not benefit from VoIP are described along with the potential productivity gains. The attitude towards VoIP is positive provided time is taken to gain the necessary knowledge - not necessarily a simple task for time-poor small businesses.

Some of the key recommendations outlined in the SETEL guide include:

  • Small businesses must skill up on VoIP before venturing into this new domain.
  • Small businesses must carry out their own self-assessment to determine if VoIP is suitable for their business practices and situation.
  • There is no 'one size fits all' VoIP service for small businesses.
  • Small business must be alert as there are almost no VoIP consumer protection measures.

Download a copy of the SETEL Guide to VoIP for Small Business or direct other enquiries to SETEL Executive Director Ewan Brown on (02) 62517823.

SETEL aims to advance the interests of small, micro and home business as consumers of telecommunications services with industry, government and regulators.

New master classes for Accelerate Your Business Growth participants

One of the key outcomes of the Accelerate Your Business Growth program is identifying the issues that are restricting the participants from growing their businesses and achieving their vision.

I must say it is powerful exercise working with the businesses and we never know what these issue will turn out to be. This is a strength of the program - that it responds to the participants' needs as uncovered in the sessions.

At our last group mentoring sessions a number of issues were identified, and as a result the following master classes will be held.

Marketing Positioning and Branding (Master Class) - 4 July

The best marketing always comes from identifying clear target markets and not trying to be all things to all people.

To successfully grow your business you also need to understand what is happening in your industry and your local marketplace.

This practical master class will tackle the tricky topic of positioning.

Learn how to evaluate your competitors and position your business towards your competitive advantages rather than compete head-to-head. Discover how to own a market niche and see how image, brand and price will all impact on your positioning.

Marketing segmentation for a growth business 3 years plus requires a different set of skills. Linked in with the vision plan it becomes a very powerful tool to grow your business.

Contracting and Sub-Contracting (Master Class) - 5 July

  • If you employ contractors, what do you need to know about insurance, public liability, 80% of income issue?
  • If you are a contractor, what insurances or liability do you need to carry?
  • What does Workers Compensation cover as far as subcontractors are concerned?

This is a huge issue for a lot of small businesses and we know you'll have many questions so there will be plenty of opportunities for discussion and time allocated for practical exercises.

System and Procedures: Capturing data for ongoing market research (Master Class) - 17 July

Details of this master class yet to be posted.
