News from CEO David Baumgarten
Last Friday we had our audit as a Registered Training organisation. This process can increase the stress levels, however I am pleased to advise that we passed with flying colours. I can tell you, we were one happy team.
May is Innovation Month and we are celebrating with a Business Breakfast on 22 May with our partners IP Australia, HP Australia, Sensis, and City of Sydney (providing venue of the Sydney Town Hall vestibule.) Our guest speaker will be Ian Gardiner from internet broadcasting company Viocorp.
Continuing with the IT theme we have the second Trade Mark Centenary Workshop Series on 17 May, Do it Right - How to Protect Your Assets. I cannot stress enough that growing a business is about branding and protecting your assets, including intellectual property.
Following the recent State Election we have a new Small Business Minister, Joe Tripodi Member for Fairfield. I have extended an invitation to the Minister to visit our BEC and he has accepted. We wish the Minister all the best in his new portfolio.
It was great to see a good turn out last month at our Burwood Business Breakfast (more than 60 attendees) and Newtown Business Breakfast (more than 60 attendees).
On 7 May I attended a networking function of Randwick Tourism. More than 50 people benefited from a very motivational presentation by Australian Long Distance Smith. Congratulations to Dirk and the team (www.sportscoast.com.au).
We welcome the Women in Small Enterprise Network to our community noticeboard. Make sure you visit the noticeboard to see what the WiSE Network are up to!
Until next month, why not try something different and work outside your comfort zone. This will help you remain externally focused on your business, remain proactive and grow your business. If you are internally focused, you will end up just 'treading water'.

Celebrating innovation month
Business Breakfast 22 May - Sydney Town Hall
2002 saw the crash of internet stock around the world.
At the same time, Ian Gardiner moved from his native Scotland to Australia and launched an internet broadcasting company, Viocorp, knowing no one locally.
Just 5 years later we have a truly Australian IT success story.
Ian will enlighten us on 'Innovation - the changing phase of media' and share with us his journey of how he grew the business, including:
- coping with pitfalls
- lessons learned along the way
- successes
- working through the many Intellectual Property issues.
Ian's story is an inspiration, a story that combines:
- an unwavering vision to grow Viocorp into a global force in internet broadcasting
- leading the team forward with the launch of the company's next generation Internet publishing platform, Viostream
- using crucial in-depth market knowledge to develop the company's capabilities in delivering the very best in rich media.
This breakfast is being held in the charm of the Sydney Town Hall vestibule, bringing together the splendour and innovation of a past era with the present for a Business Breakfast in celebration of Innovation Month.
Remember to bring the business cards!

Do you need invention protection?
In 2001, IP Australia launched a new type of protection - the innovation patent. It was introduced to stimulate innovation among small to medium business and local industry by offering a lower inventive threshold than a standard patent.
Benefits of the innovation patent include:
- fast, cost effective and easy to obtain protection option
- reduces the risks involved in research and development
- can help you protect and then commercialise your intellectual property.
- generally granted within one month (a standard patent can take up to four years).
If the patentee wants to legally enforce their innovation patent they must have it examined.
More information on the innovation patent can be accessed at http://www.ipaustralia.gov.au/patents/what_innovation.shtml

Accelerate Your Business Growth workshops and master classes in May /June
Join the Accelerate Club and reap the benefits of growing your business
Dates for your diary:
Growth Planning workshop is on 29th May 2007 Training Room
Group mentoring session - 29th May 2007- Board Room
Participants of our last growth planning workshop are working on their Business Vision in preparation for their group mentoring session.
After the mentoring session the group will progress to Masterclass and Brains Trust sessions, each 2 hours in length.
Masterclasses in May/June
Service business owners who have already participated in the Growth Planning Workshop can choose to attend any of the following Master Classes to help achieve their goals faster.
Master Class : The big step: taking on staff. Should I? Is the time right? Can I afford it? How about remuneration? Incentives?
This master class will look at the following:
- Staffing - should I / shouldn't I?
- At what point do I take on staff?
- Contractors and alternatives to taking on staff
- Recruitment
- Organisational structure
- Recruiting for values of the organisation
- Key accountability, action planning and measurement
- Staff deliverables and responsibility
- Why staff jobs exist
- Salary value added
- Remuneration/incentives for keeping staff.
The master class facilitator will be Victoria Sciacca. Click here for a profile on Victoria.
The follow up to this master class is a Brains Trust which will be anchored by Victoria Sciacca and supported by Allyson Cox (accountant) and Gary Meadows (senior solicitor, Koffel's Solicitors & Barristers) who has expertise in the new IR laws.
The Brains Trust will be held in January and the actual date will be decided by the participants attending the master class.
Master Class : Yes I need to segment my market, but have I got it right? How do I position the segmentation?
Marketing segmentation for a growth business aged 3 years plus requires a different set of skills than for other stages of growth. When linked with the vision plan it becomes a very powerful tool to grow the business.
If you are fed up with being all things to all people?
Time you started to focus on high profit, high desirability target markets?
Market segmentation is the key to growing your business if you are in the 3 year plus phase.
Find out how to segment your existing client base, how to evaluate potential markets and how to get more of the clients you want and less of the ones you don't.
This practical master class will give you a chance to work through the process with your client base, learn why not all clients are equal and set goals for building profit through target markets.
This session will also tackle the tricky topic of positioning.
Learn how to evaluate your competitors and position your business towards your competitive advantages rather than compete head to head.
Another practical diagnostic will help you see how you stack up in the positioning stakes.
There will be plenty of opportunities for discussion and time allocated for practical exercises.
The master class Presenter is Linda Hailey

Important lessons in dispute management
This must-read article has been produced by BEC member Peter Townsend from Townsends Business & Corporate Lawyers.
The emergence of some interesting trends in the Australian marketplace as well as recent cases in our practice highlight important lessons for clients in the area of dispute management.
The words 'dispute' and 'litigation' bring shock and horror to most clients we know! But this needn't be the case. We hope these articles will serve to debunk some of the terms involved and help you better understand the processes involved. Information is power!
Case study # 1: Managing the process
Case study # 2: Litigation - managing client expectations
Case study # 3: To document or not to document?
Case study # 4: When litigation becomes inevitable
Case study # 5: Never assume!
TRENDS # A: Evolving interpretations
TRENDS # B: New emphasis on 'Collaborative Law'
CONCLUSION
Life's too serious: Lawyers!

Corporate Australia supporting small business
You may realise by now that the BEC is an organisation that rolls up its sleeves to assist small business. It was very pleasing recently to receive some help ourselves from Hewlett-Packard Australia Pty Ltd, City Of Sydney and Sensis in our partnership with IP Australia in putting together our Innovation Breakfast.
Many, many thanks to the small business divisions of these respective organisations.
