News from CEO David Baumgarten

It has hit me like a ton of bricks…people are talking about the Christmas break and Christmas drinks… WOW where has the year gone? (The truth is I am getting older…. hold back, it is all going way too fast!)

October was a month of celebration. On the 12th October we had the Randwick Small Business Awards Gala Evening. And what an evening it was. Over 450 local businesses gathered at South Sydney Juniors. Boy do they know how to party!

Congratulations to all winners of the categories and especially to Sydney Safe Surf School, Maroubra, for winning the Best Business category.

The Australia Post NSW/ACT Small Business Award winners were announced at a gala presentation night on 15th October at the Sofitel Wentworth, Sydney. And it really was a gala evening. These awards get better every year (if that is possible). Again congratulations to all winners and in particular to Platinum Electrical for winning the overall and business growth awards.

It is now twelve months since we opened business in the city office. When I look back over this period I am amazed that we have achieved so much. I think our greatest achievement is to continue business as usual and create an awareness of the Sydney Business Advisory service in our new areas.

I am pleased to advise that over the past year we have provided over 22,000 contacts, including face-to-face consultation, workshops, our networking events and phone calls. I am now planning our 2006 programs and unlike 2005 we will have a benchmark to work from. 2005 was uncharted waters.

In this month's newsletter we profile our eBay workshops, our Growth Program and Community Noticeboard. If you are looking for networking then go no further… Two Cocktail functions in Eastern Suburbs, A business Breakfast in Bondi Junction . In Canada Bay , the Canada Bay Business Group have another cocktail function plus lots of events run by Canada Bay Council. A Gala functions at Bankstown and our own functions this month include cocktail s  on 8th November to launch our Growth Program ,the Business lounge and a business breakfast in Burwood  in conjunction  with Burwood Council

Other events include the Bankstown Business Awards, a business breakfast in Burwood and our new initiative, Business Thursdays.

So read on and enjoy the run-up to the festive season.

Is your business ready for growth? Next workshop 22nd November

"The tools provided to plan were perfectly timed, it saved me from procrastinating in the planning process. The organic networking was a plus."

Darren Palmer,  Commotion New Media 22/10/05

"Fun, interesting, interactive, and good to hear about other stories and similar hurdles."

Matthew Shaw , V2M,   22/10/05

On 22nd October we held our first growth workshop. It was very interesting as participants were businesses from two to 13 years' operation who took the opportunity to perform a thorough health check on their businesses under the direction of presenter Linda Hailey.

The feedback was "I want more!"  "Very informative & good value."  "Wow, the stages of business growth allowed me to understand where I am in my business."

From this workshop we collected the real growth issues. In the next workshops we will be able to assist workshop attendees to work through these issues.

The Growth Program is a combination of workshops, mentoring and a brains trust for those in business two years plus. Our next workshop is on 22nd November.

The Program has very clear entry and exit pathways, you are in control of the process and where you enter and exit will depend on what stage you are at in your business cycle.

To be eligible for the program you must:

  • be a business that has operated for two years or more
  • have a minimum turnover(not profit of $100,000 plus )
  • be serious about taking the growth of your business to the next level.

Linda Hailey will show you how to:
  • Identify key opportunities
  • Identify key challenges
  • Create a vision
  • Go for growthYou will leave this workshop having identified
  • the key internal and external issues affecting your business
  • the changes required to achieve your vision
  • pathways to address your business issues and vision.

Our Petrol Survey - Ten Ways to Save on Petrol

I would like to thank all those who responded to our recent survey on petrol prices and the impact on your business. It is obvious that from the response that it is starting to impact on the bottom line and we are seeing increasing prices in products and services as a result.

The feedback also told me that a lot of businesses are operating smarter and reviewing their business operations. As a thank you the following tips may help (Source: NRMA):

Shop around: check out www.mynrma.com.au/petrolwatch for the cheapest daily petrol in Sydney.

    1. Refuel when prices are low: not when your tank is empty.

    2. Fill up early: petrol is usually cheapest to buy on Monday and early Tuesday. Save more than $200 a year by buying petrol early in the week.

    3. Avoid hard acceleration and braking: flow with the traffic - smooth driving can reduce fuel consumption by up to 30%. Don't rest your left foot on the brake of an automatic vehicle - the extra drag increases fuel consumption by 5%.

    4. Watch your speed: by traveling at 90 km/h rather than 110 km/h you can reduce fuel consumption by 10% or more.

    5. Lighten the load: take off roof racks and bullbats if they're not needed. Remove golf clubs or tools if you're not using them - and reduce fuel consumption by up to 5%. Keep your tyre pressure towards the top of the manufacturer's recommended range.

    6. Switch off: when stuck in traffic for any length of time turn the key to the "accessory" position (not to "off") and if an automatic transmission, shift to "park". Vehicles fitted with this feature typically reduce fuel consumption in urban areas by up to 15%.

    7. Open the windows: when the weather is fine, switch off the air-conditioning. This reduces fuel consumption by up to 10% in urban driving.

    8. Shop smart: take advantage of a range of shopper docket schemes.

    9. Service your car regularly: blocked air filters can increase fuel consumption significantly. Source: NRMA

Legal Tip - Have You Told Your Employees About Christmas Leave?

If you want to close your business over the Christmas period and require your employees to take part of their annual holidays at that time then you must comply with the law.

The NSW Annual Holidays Act 1944 requires you to provide one month's notice of the "specified period" (ie the period you intend to close) to your employees. If you put on staff before Christmas who will be employed for less than a month before the closedown, you must notify them on their first day at work.

This year, the Public Holidays in NSW are on Monday and Tuesday December 26 and 27, the New Year holiday is Monday January 2 and Australia Day holiday is Thursday January 26, 2006. Everyone is paid their ordinary pay for these days.

If your employees are entitled to annual leave, the remaining days will be taken as annual leave. If your employees are not yet entitled to holidays for the whole of the closedown, they must take their annual leave, then the rest as so-called "leave without pay".

Despite what it is called, this leave is not "without pay" because you must pay to the employee one- twelfth of their "ordinary pay" for these days leave without pay. "Ordinary pay" is the pay the worker receives for their normal weekly number of hours of work.

If you have to pay any of this money, the employee starts accumulating annual holidays again from the start of the closedown. Any employee who is not yet entitled to annual leave can, if you both agree, take annual leave in advance of their entitlement. This is probably a simpler way to go.

As always, notice should be provided in a form in which you can be certain every individual employee knows and understands it and can be sure to receive it in plenty of time.
