Keeping your workplace safe and healthy

Regardless of the number of workers you employ, from 1 September 2003, all small businesses will need to comply with the changes made in 2001 to the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) laws.

For the next 12 months, Work Cover will focus on providing as much advice and assistance required to ensure that employers are aware of their OHS obligations.

Employers are now required by law to consult with their workers on any matters affecting the health and safety of person in the workplace. Employers must talk to their workers and seek their input on how to best make the workplace safe. The 'duty to consult' applies to all employers.

The Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 2001 imposes obligations on all employers to implement risk management processes in their workplace.

Risk management includes:

  • Identifying the hazards
  • Assessing the risks
  • Eliminating or controlling the risks
  • Reviewing the risk assessments.

This must be done for all hazards in all workplaces. Further information can be obtained by visiting workcover N.S.W Web site. A Link can be found in helpful links on navigation bar.
