As I write this I am reflecting on the last two months. All I can say is, WOW, staff shortages sure can provide challenges.
Operating a business enterprise centre is no different to running a business. In past newsletters, I have shared many business challenges with you. As you may know, I have had a major change in staff. Four staff moving on out of a total of nine. Nichole moving to Parkes, Vanessa to Italy, Stuart to other employment and now Leona is moving to Melbourne. Oh, the challenges!
The good news is we have appointed Diane O'Keeffe as Manager Operations and Danielle Cope as NEIS Support at Bondi Junction. Welcome to the team.
Some other good news is that the star rating for the NEIS program has been released. We have maintained our 4.5 star rating (out of 5) which positions us in the top 10% Australia-wide and highest performer in the Sydney region. Thank you to a dedicated team.
One of the best parts of my job is the people I get to meet. During the month I attended the ATO Launch of Compliance Program 2007-08. I met Tax Commissioner Michael D'Ascenzo and Deputy Commissioner Micro Enterprises and Individuals Erin Holland. I was very impressed with how approachable and open to feedback they were.
More than 40 people attended our monthly Business Lounge on 23 August, including Ben Englefield and Steven Hooper from City Ford.
Small Business September 2007, hosted by the Department of State and Regional Development, is a month-long program of workshops and other events to assist small to medium business owners. Check out http://www.smallbiz.nsw.gov.au/sbmonth/ for all the details.
Do not forget to check our Community Noticeboard for other events in your area.
Hope to see you at one of these events or one of our own during the month.
The 2007 BEC Australia Awards for Performance will be held in October (next month), with nominations closing 7 September. The awards are proudly sponsored by business.gov.au and the Australian Tax Office Small Business Program.
The aim of the BEC Australia Awards is to highlight the excellence that exists within the national BEC network and recognise:
The first release of data from the 2006 Census has been made available on the ABS website. If you're keen to see the first cut of numbers for your area go to www.abs.gov.au.
Occupants - families, lone persons etc.
Some more detailed tables are available under Census Topics/Tables. These include the QuickStats but also include:
- Details on population by age
- Earnings (read spending power!) for individual and households
- Qualifications
- Housing costs.
If you choose the 'Topics' option you'll notice a prompt quite early on for 'Place of Usual Residence' or 'Location on Census Night'. Choose the Place of Usual Residence as this removes the tourists from the counts for your area. This is a bonus as this data has not been available for some time in previous years. It is especially important for people in winter wonderland areas full of tyre-kickers in August - like the ski areas and Far North Queensland!
The more interesting data (from an economist's point of view) on occupations, industries of employment etc. will be released in October.
As many of the people I work with regularly already know, I am particularly keen on tracking the characteristics of newcomers - things like the incomes, household type and occupations of people who have moved into an area in the 12 months and 5 years to August 2006. This data will also be available in October.
Please give us a ring or an email if you'd like any help making sense of the new data. We'll be concentrating on getting ready for analysis of the second release later in the year and will keep you informed about how we are going.

CareerMums - an innovative approach to staff shortage
A main topic of conversation I am having with employers is the current skills shortage. It is obvious some innovative thinking in relation to our staffing situation is required. We are now starting to see a number of businesses being launched targeting the untapped resource of mums at home.
CareerMums is a new service for progressive employers looking for new and better ways to provide family friendly and flexible work initiatives for the benefit of their employees and their business.
This service can assist with:
- developing simple and effective flexible work/life balance policies that work
- creating increased workforce flexibility to meet the demands of your business and employees
- retaining your talented female workforce with return-to-work programs
- providing your working parents with a toolkit to manage life in the workplace as a parent.
BEC members will receive a 20% discount for using the CareerMums service. Just mention BEC when you contact them. Visit www.careermums.com.au for further information and contact details.
