News from CEO David Baumgarten

Activities at the Business Enterprise Centre are now in full swing for the year.

We've launched the 2007 Breakfast Series with a well-attended Business Thursday on 1 February, and we have our second event, the Randwick Business Breakfast coming up on 27 February and the Burwood Business Breakfast fast approaching on 13 February. And one for next month's diary, don't miss Tim Pethick, founder of the Nudie juice company and guest at our Eastern Suburbs Business Breakfast on 6 March.

Our Business Lounge [link to newsletter], which we road tested in 2006, is now a permanent feature of our networking events. A recent Business Lounge was held for those interested in the Accelerate Your Business Growth Program.

One of my goals this year is to be out of the office more (although it does present the challenge of how many coffees I can have in one day!). I am enjoying achieving this goal as I find myself meeting associations, making strategic alliances, interacting with councils and departmental staff and, the best part, meeting interesting people with great ideas.

I was very kindly invited to attend the launch of BNI International Networking Week. BNI Australia is a business and professional networking organisation. . At the luncheon I also caught up with Lee Clark, Business Development Manager of Business Swap. Both of these organisations are great networking groups. I also attended a LEADS meeting at Bondi Junction. All these organisations offer great networking opportunities( See Community Noticeboard on Web Site).

Enjoy your month, and if you attend one of our many events in the next few months please make yourself known to me.

David Baumgarten
CEO

These days more than ever people are aspiring to creative independence in their business life. New ideas are flowing and many of us are exploring self-employment options.

Every idea needs a reality check to review its financial viability and potential success.

Founder of the Nudie juice company, Tim Pethick, shares his experience - 6 March

Eastern Suburbs Business Breakfast

To indulge his cravings for fresh fruit, and to demonstrate the power of emotional branding, Tim started nudie in early 2003. In a little over two years, and despite a devastating fire which destroyed the business in May 2004, Tim built nudie into a business turning over $18m a year and recognised as one of the top 10 most influential brands in the Asia Pacific region.

The fruit, they say, doesn't fall far from the tree. The real story behind nudie ('naked as nature intended', completely bare of preservatives and additives, with 'a day's fruit in every bottle') is a simple one about a man with a passion for fruit and brands, who then went out to create a synergy of both passions.

Full details on our website mid-February.

How the Program Works

1. Sign up for the program by completing an enrolment form from Clearly Business

2. Complete a Health Check to evaluate what shape your business is in at the moment

3. Attend a Growth Planning Workshop and complete a Growth Plan for your business
This exciting new diagnostic tool will allow you to do away with the old Business Plan model and give you a clear path for your business in less time and with less stress. This workshop will give you the format and get you started. You'll then take the basis of your Growth Plan back to your office to work on for a couple of weeks and really hone your vision.

4.Have a facilitated group meeting to discuss your Growth Plan and identify your Business Issues
Now that you've got the vision of where you want to take your business in the next 2-3 years, you can sit down and confirm what issues, barriers or gaps you'll need to overcome or systems you need to put in place to get there. These issues are specific to you and your business and we'll then run Master Classes based on what you ask for - we don't make you fit in with a schedule of workshops that may not be relevant to you.

5. Attend a Growth Issues Master Class
Based on the issues you've identified that you would like more information on or assistance with, we'll host a variety of Master Classes a couple of weeks after your group meeting. These Master Classes will be facilitated by an expert on the relevant topic and you'll interact with other small business owners facing the same issues as you. Access to industry experts and support of a peer group are highlighted as an enormous benefit by our current participants. Typically you'll be shown diagnostic exercises you can complete in your own time.

6. Ask the Brains Trust
Approximately two weeks following your Master Class bring your homework and you'll get an opportunity to further discuss your Master Class topic with a Brains Trust. The Brains Trust is a panel up of three industry experts from different sectors with knowledge in business growth strategies relevant to your Master Class Growth Issue.

This is an Australian Government funded service under the Building Entrepreneurship in Small Business Program
