News from CEO David Baumgarten

You will notice that the March newsletter is a little late. I apologise, but I have been struggling with the financial side of the job: budgets and cash flows. Boy, getting the mind into that head space was difficult! Perhaps I'm not the only one who finds that a challenge?

February saw the launch of our 2007 Business Breakfast series with more than 70 people attending in Burwood, and another 70 guests at the City of Randwick Combined Chambers of Commerce Breakfast Series. In March, we had 180 people turn up to hear Nudie founder Tim Pethick tell his story at our first Eastern Suburbs Breakfast for the year. Our next event will be 21 March with the Newtown Business Breakfast, Keeping Life Together, which you can read about below.

Our Business Thursdays are also off to a good start. We will be introducing this concept to Bankstown, with Business Wednesdays.

We are also planning some joint initiatives with IP Australia and City Of Sydney. More on this at a later date.

I am also very pleased about how our Accelerate Your Business Growth program is going. It has taken some effort, but we are spreading the message that for service businesses 3-years plus, it is about growth planning not business planning.

I am in need of business mentors for our Women in Business Program. Do not underestimate what experience you have that could help someone else starting out. Further details are below in this newsletter.

Paralympic Fundraiser this Wednesday

Bowl them over at this great networking opportunity on 21 March.

BEC member Di Pass from 360HR is hosting a corporate bowls event to raise much needed funds for our Australian Paralympic Team. The fundraising target for Beijing 2008 is $3.5 million.

Dress code: Casual with bare feet or socks for bowling, and wear your corporate shirt if you have one.

Also bring 150 business cards to hand out to a range of fantastic business contacts.

Business mentors needed for the Women in Business Mentor Program

We are seeking mentors to assist the 22 entrepreneurs enrolled in our Women in Business Mentor Program develop their business.

The program starts on 28 March 2007.

It is very rewarding being given the opportunity to 'give back', and this program is one of the most rewarding that I am involved with.

We are seeking men or women who have a minimum of five years experience as an owner/operator of a small business or businesses. It is not essential that you currently own a small business, but that you had that experience recently.

Mentors need to have the available time to commit to the program. A total of 25-30 contact hours are anticipated. Responsibilities are:

  • Mentoring - providing one-on-one mentor support for at least 20 hours over the six-month program period. The time frames of meetings between you and the Mentoree are to be jointly agreed. The department will assist in any way necessary.
  • Mentor Briefing Session - a two-hour evening briefing session will give an in-depth explanation of the program and the role and responsibilities of a Mentor.
  • Meet Your Mentor Night - a two-hour evening session where Mentors and Mentorees will be matched in pairs and agreements outlining the mentoring relationship are signed.

We encourage mentors to attend the other workshops (no charge) as it is a great opportunity to review your business and do some networking.

ATO consulting with the community

I wish to give credit to the ATO for their ongoing commitment to consultation with their clients.

I am honoured to sit on a Home-Based Business Partnership. I was amazed at our last meeting to be told that they have 72 partnership forums in all aspects of industry and business sectors.

Industry sectors meet on a regular basis with the ATO for a two-way information exchange. The proactive agenda covers what is happening in particular areas of taxation and legislation, and how it will affect that industry business sector.

In the next newsletter I will update you on the important issue of superannuation in relation to engaging contractors for labour and contractors for outcomes.

Also, over the next few months I will advise of future issues to be discussed. I encourage you to give me your comments.

Business Wednesdays launch in Bankstown

We are expanding our services under the Sydney Business Advisory Service to Bankstown. This service is provided on behalf of the NSW Department of State And Regional Development.

We currently provide Business Facilitation in Bankstown on a regular basis. Now, with the support of The Bankstown Canterbury Torch newspaper (Trent Engisch) and Bankstown Council (Graham Humphreys), Bankstown Business Wednesdays will be held each month.

A big thank you to The Torch and Bankstown Council. Without your support we could not do what we do.

Why we click with some and clash with others

Networking with Olympic City Referrals

I was recently a guest speaker at the Olympic City Referrals networking group. I continue to be impressed with the mix of businesses that attend these breakfasts.

More than 50 guests attended the breakfast I spoke at. Let me tell you, some serious networking was taking place.

This networking group helps other businesses grow through word-of-mouth and passes referrals to each other.

Olympic City Referrals currently has three regular meeting groups. Each meeting runs for about an hour and a half and is held in an informal environment where people can network and give referrals over breakfast and some coffee.

OCR - Abbotsford
Meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month at Garnish Cafe, 58 Dalhousie St (corner of Winchcombe Ave), Haberfield, at 7.15 am.

OCR - Rozelle
Meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at The Barn Cafe, 731-735 Darling Street (corner of Cambridge St), Rozelle, at 7.30 am.

OCR - Concord
Meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month at The Coffee Club, Ground Level, Rhodes Shopping Centre, Rhodes, at 7.15 am.
